Restoration of a Herreshoff New York 50' Class Sloop
After a dismasting in 1980, SPARTAN was hauled
for major repairs at Pilots Point Marina in Westbrook, CT.
Restoration was begun at Pilots Point in 1981. When the lower
hull work was done and planking was almost completed, she
was launched and towed in 1987 to Crocker's Boat Yard in New
London, CT, where she was hauled out and work continued. The
SPARTAN project was halted in 1990 with the deck beams in
place and the hull planking completed, but with no decking.
In 1993 she was moved by truck to the Herreshoff Marine Museum
in Bristol, RI where she was stored.
After languishing for a number of the years,
the project was revived by a new owner in 2006. SPARTAN is
undergoing a complete restoration with a goal of returning
her to the classic racing circuit, particularly in the Mediterranean.
