Restoration of a Herreshoff New York 50' Class Sloop
JGTSCA members visited the McClave, Philbrick
& Giblin (MP&G) boatyard recently in Mystic, CT to
view progress on the restoration of SPARTAN, a New York 50
Class sloop. SPARTAN is believed to be the only remaining
member of nine NY50's originally built in 1913 by the legendary
Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, RI. SPARTAN has
an overall length of 72 feet and is 50 feet at the waterline.
Our tour was arranged by Bruce Cresser, a boatbuilder at MP&G
and also a member of our club.
