JGTSCA Participates in Sea Scouts Open House
Sea Scouting is adventure on sea and land. Sea
Scouting is part of the Boy Scouts of America and is a co-education
program, offered to young adults between the ages of 14 and
21. It's a chance to learn and have fun at the same time
Sea Scouting is organized to promote better
citizenship and to improve members' boating skills and knowledge.
These objectives are accomplished through instruction and
practice in water safety, boating skills, outdoor, social,
and service experiences, and knowledge of our maritime heritage.
This occurs through association with others of the same age
and with adults who provide the necessary instruction and
leadership.
The Sea Scouts of Ship Dragon (SSS 584) based
in Groton, CT have volunteered to assist the JGTSCA in our
annual Pine Island clean up on May 4. This event is part of
the local community Earth Day program.
This activity is being co-sponsored by ShopRite
Supermarkets and its local New London
store. This is part of ShopRite’s Earth Day mission,
which is to promote civic engagement, broaden the meaning
of “environment,” and mobilize communities.
The Sea Scout Open House was held at the US
Submarine Veterans Base, Groton, CT on April 6 (another Open
House is planned for Monday, April 21 from 7-9pm).
Members of the JGTSCA attended the Sea Scouts
Open House. JGTSCA President Phil Behney talked to the Sea
Scouts about our programs and invited them to join us in future
boatbuilding activities. John Maxson had his Faering dory
on display and described his vision for the craft and the
construction process.
Marshall Parsons, Skipper of the Sea Scout Ship
Dragon gave a program overview. Several of the Sea Scouts
described their experiences in the program and highlighted
some of the benefits. The event was also attended by the US
Power Squadron with representatives from the local New London
squadron.
