John Gardner Chapter: September 2009 Meeting Minutes
The John Gardner Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association.
Minutes for the September 11, 2009 membership meeting of
the John Gardner Chapter of the TSCA.
President Russell Smith called the meeting to order at 6:45.P.M.
at the Avery Point Boathouse. In attendance were Phil Behney,
George Spragg, Bill Armitage (Treasurer), Andy Strode, Paul
Robertson, Rob Pittaway, John Hacunda (Vice-President / Acting
Secretary), and new member Sandy D’Esopo.
Secretary’s Report
There were no meetings during July and August so there was
no secretary’s report.
Treasurer’s Report:
Treasurer Armitage distributed a report for June through
September 6, 2009 showing income of $673 including dues $60,
tag sale $593, and donation (Capt. Sean Bercaw $20). There
were no expenses during this period so the balance is $2,756.95.
Motion to accept was approved.
President Smith asked members to observe a moment of silence
in memory of 9/11 and the men and women of our armed services.
Old Business:
Russell Smith, Phil Behney and Bill Armitage traveled to
Gloucester, MA to watch Sean Bercaw race in the Blackburn
Challenge on July 18.
Russell and Sean took part in a 6-mile row as part of the
Bird Island Challenge on Aug. 9 at Wareham, MA.
The Jamestown, RI Counter Revolution row on Aug 29 was moved
to Providence because of bad weather. Russ and Sean had been
scheduled to row, but did not participate because of the bad
conditions and only found out later that the race was moved
up the bay to more sheltered waters.
Russ used two dories and the gig during the summer as part
of a rowing summer camp.
New Business:
Russell is replacing the deck on the gig, Bill Armitage donated
the wood.
Russell is starting the Ledyard Parks and Recreation rowing
program once again for high-school aged kids. The program
runs for 6-weeks and Russ is hoping to have his rowers prepared
to take part in the Plymouth race, Head of the Weir, and the
Icebreaker.
Sandy D’Esopo donated a portable wood planer to the
club.
Boathouse Projects:
Progress continues on John Hacunda’s new 12’
skiff. Frames have been fastened, risers, and gunwales cut.
George Spragg is working on his canoe.
Rob Pittaway and Wil Iturriino have been busy painting and
putting leather collars on the new oars.
Upcoming Events:
September 20 - Family Day at UConn, Avery Point Campus, is
scheduled for Sept. 20, 12 noon to 4pm (see more details at
bottom). The club needs volunteers to represent JGTSCA during
Family Day. Contact Russ if you can attend that day.
September 25 – Ledge Light Gala, New London, CT
The Ledge Light Gala is Friday the 25th in New London. There
is information about it at Ledge light@Yahoo.com or at the
Project Oceanology site. Todd and Marcia Gipstein are running
it. Tickets are $75.00 and it includes dinner and Todd's documentary
