John Gardner Chapter: September 2011 Meeting Minutes
President John Symons called the meeting to order at 1:30pm
at the Avery Point Campus boathouse.
Introduction of members and guests:
John Symons (pres.), Bill Armitage (treas.), Phil Behney
(sec.), Sandy D’Esopo Chaisson Dory, Rob Pittaway, Jim
Clark, George Spragg, Russ Smith, Tom Jannke, and Genevieve
Favre.
Minutes:
Minutes from June meeting were approved as distributed.
Treasurer’s Report:
Treasurer’s report was read by Bill Armitage (balance
of 3,068.94) and approved by the membership. Bill reported
that we have 24 paid members
Old Business:
Shop activities:
• Sandy D’Esopo and Larry Magee will continue
on dust collection system. Russ is working on dust collecting
for the hand sanders.
• Three dories have been converted to double rowers
and the last one may be converted on its next maintenance
cycle. The Dory “Jane” is in the shop and needs
paint and maintenance.
• John Symons plans to put 4 more coats of varnish
on the Thomson and then reassemble it.
• Sandy D’Esopo has removed the centerboard trunk
and thwarts of the Chaisson Dory and plans to continue removing
rivets holding the damaged planks. His goal is to have the
boat out of the shop by late spring and sail it to the small
craft workshop. Russ asked sandy if he would be willing to
include students on this project, Sandy indicated that he
would consider this and would like more info.
Community Outreach:
Russ Smith will maintain a liaison with Randall Paterson,
Prescott Littlefield, and others from Uconn.
New Business
Russ Smith proposed building another AP Dory perhaps in conjunction
with his recreation group.
Tom Jannke would like to be on the queue to build a kit Kayak
Bill Armitage reminded us that the agreed upon projects shall
include one member project and one club project to avoid congestion
in the shop.
There will be a major shop clean-up next meeting starting
at 10am, Oct 2. Sandy offered to bring coffee.
John Symons asked for any interest in Sunday rowing outings
to be brought to his attention so he may inform the membership.
Nominations for Secretary and Vice President will be accepted
at the October meeting.
Bill Armitage, as Treasurer, introduced the possibility of
raising the dues amount. Discussion followed and a motion
was made, seconded and passed to increase the membership fee
to 20.00
Russ Smith recommended that the “Rob Roy” canoe
be auctioned on EBay with a starting bid of 999.95, Discussion
ensued regarding the need for more information regarding the
EBay process and parameters of sale before the motion be taken
to a vote as well as ideas regarding the value of the boat.
Bill Armitage offered to use his EBay experience and list
the boat for the club. A motion was made to have Bill Armitage
list the “Rob Roy” on EBay with a starting bid
of 999.95 and a reserve of 1500.00. The motion was seconded
and passed.
Sandy D’Esopo offered to sharpen the club chisels at
home.
