John Gardner Chapter: May 2009 Meeting Minutes
The John Gardner Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association.
Minutes for the May 3, 2009 membership meeting of the John
Gardner Chapter of the TSCA.
President Russell Smith called the meeting to order at 1:31.P.M.
at the Avery Point Boathouse. In attendance were John Symons,
John Hacunda, Rob Pittaway, Larry Magee, Bill Armitage, Andrew
Strode, Paul Robertson, Phil Behney, Scott Brand, guest helpers
for the Pine Island cleanup Evan Bensko, Kate Webler from
the Ledyard rowing program and Caroline Hacunda.
Secretary’s Report
The secretary’s report was approved as distributed
with one correction to the date of the Essex River Row to
May 9Th.
Treasurer’s Report:
The report was approved as reported and distributed by Treas.
Bill Armitage. Bill reported expenditures of
$130 to George Spragg for the new Community Boating signs
and $113.15 to F.H. Ebinger for oar leather.
No income reported leaving a new balance of $2,163,15 as
of 5/1/09.
Old Business:
The Pine Island clean up project held this morning was a
success with the rain holding off until the row back to the
boat launch. The usual amount of trash that accumulates on
the island each year was collected and disposed of with help
from Evan Bensko, Kate Webler from the Ledyard rowing program
and Caroline Hacunda that was much appreciated. All participants
retired to the boat shop that was set up for the short monthly
meeting and barbecue that included the SSS 584 Sea Scout Squadron.
George Spragg and Andy Strode completed and installed the
new Community Boating signs displayed fore and aft on the
boathouse exterior.
New Business:
Volunteers and sale items are still needed for the Nautical
Tag Sale coming up in June.
Russell is working on getting a boathouse on Highland Lake
for his Ledyard rowingprogram.
Boathouse Projects:
John Hacunda’s new 14’ skiff is nearing completion.
Planking almost done and ready for gunwales.
Bill Armitage's new boat is in the shop and appears to be
getting a new coat of paint.
Upcoming Events:
Essex River Race, Essex, MA Row – 5.5 miles open water
- May 9Th.
Messabout – date to be determined – staff to
be formed to handle food, destination, participates, etc.
The Nautical Tag Sale – Boat shop parking lot, June
13Th. 9A.M to 2P.M.
Campout on Selden Island in the Connecticut River to be
determined. Possible combined with messabout.
Good of the Order: The JGTSCA warmly welcomes new
member Scott Brand!
A salute to the members who participated in the Earth Day
celebration Pine Island cleanup, Phil Behney for barbecue
provisions and Scott Brand for grilling the hamburgers and
hotdogs.
Appreciation to George Spragg and Andy Strode for installing
the new signs on the boat shop.
Motion to adjourn at 1:47 P.M.
Next Meeting: 2:00 P.M. on June 6, 2009 at the Mystic
Seaport Small Craft Workshop.
