John Gardner Chapter: March 2010 Meeting Minutes
President John Hacunda called the meeting to order at 1:30
PM 3-7-2010.
Introduction of members and guests:
John Hacunda (pres.), John Symons (vice pres.), Bill Armitage
(treas.), Phil Behney (sec.), Sandy D’Esopo, Bruce Cresser,
Larry Magee, Rob Pittaway, Paul Robertson, Andy Strode, George
Spragg, Judy Strode (guest), and Genevieve Favre (guest).
Minutes
Minutes from February 7, 2010 were approved as distributed.
Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer’s report was read by Bill Armitage (balance
of $2,225.82) and approved by the membership.
Old Business
Mystic Shipyard East Garage Cleanup – Larry Magee commented
on size of building (18x20) and condition, and took photos.
Further discussion was tabled to next meeting.
Shop activities include:
- The Dory “Jane” is in the shop for maintenance
and repairs and is ready for paint.
- George continues to make progress on his canoe.
Fund Raising Activities:
- JGTSCA Nautical Tag sale has been set for June 12th 9 AM
-12 PM. Discussion followed regarding appropriate dumpster
use.
- Sandy D’Esopo agreed to contact a boat rescue organization
for possible tag sale items.
- Bruce Cresser offered to put an ad in “By the Sea”
for the tag sale.
Community Outreach:
Sandy D’Esopo contacted Helen Rozwadowski concerning
Bill Armitage’s boatbuilding course. The idea was well
received by Helen and a meeting will be set up with Helen
Rozwadowski, Bill Armitage, Russ Smith, Sandy D’Esopo,
and interested parties to discuss the details.
The Sea Scouts have asked for assistance with Boat Projects
and have asked to bring the boats to the shop on April 9th.
A lengthy discussion ensued regarding the ownership of the
boats in question and liability for work performed. The boats
are believed to belong to the CROPC Chapter. Andy Strode and
George Spragg offered to contact Dave McCullough to see if
he would be willing to take on this project.
John Hacunda and Sandy D’Esopo will man a table at
the “Maritime College and Career Fair” to be held
at the Branford House, Avery Point Campus, April 21st, 5pm
to 7pm. For more information regarding the Fair, see flyers
which are available at the boat house. Members are encouraged
to help John and Sandy man the table or simply drop in to
visit
New Business
Bruce Cresser has offered to host a visit to MP&G boat
shop (Mystic, CT) to view the restoration of New York 30 AMORITA
–rescheduled to April 18 at 1:30pm (For info on AMORITA,
see http://www.ny30.org/amorita.htm)
Larry Magee offered to put together an article for the “Ash
Breeze” from his personal journal on the “Fafnir”
project which he headed with the Sea Scouts.
John Hacunda volunteered to look into printing new brochures
and a motion was made and seconded to authorize John to have
them printed.
The club is planning a trip to Seldon Island for Sunday,
March 21st. We will meet at the Deep River Landing at 9 AM
and row across the river to the Island. Paul Roberson has
offered to give a tour and some background history on Connecticut’s
largest island. Phil Behney has offered to help transport
the club Dories to the Deep River Landing. Phil cautioned
members to be aware of spring runoff conditions. Paul will
be emailing directions. Phil and Paul asked members to let
them know who plans to attend.

June 5, 2010, 9-12 PM: Small Craft workshop at Mystic Seaport.
