John Gardner Chapter: March 2009 Meeting Minutes
The John Gardner Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association.
Minutes for the March 1, 2009 membership meeting of the John
Gardner Chapter of the TSCA.
President Russell called the meeting to order at 1:45.P.M.
at the Avery Point Boathouse. In attendance were John Hacunda,
Andy Strode, George Spragg, Bob Reed, John Symons, Russell
Smith, Phil Benhey, Will Irurrino, guest “Buddy,”
and we welcomed new member Paul Robertson.
Secretary’s Report
The secretary’s report was approved as distributed.
Treasurer’s Report:
Pres. Smith read and distributed the treasurer’s report
prepared by Treas. Bill Armitage that was approved.
Income for the Feb. was $155, expenses none leaving a new
balance of $2,391.16.
Old Business:
Small Craft Workshop: Andy Stode reported event to be held
at the Mystic Seaport June 6-7 (see notice below). More details
when available.
Exterior signs: George Spragg reported the cost for computer
generated stick-on lettering to be $85. The members present
voted approval so George can proceed with the project. The
present design was modified that he will use to secure a proof
for the next meeting.
Committee Assignments:
Education: Russ to contact Dan Nelson about a presentation
about the research vessel and Legnos Boat
Industries about a seminar on the application of their fiberglass
materials.
Boat Manager: Unassigned
Events: John Hacunda will keep the members informed about
prospective boating events.
Membership: John Symons, Bill Armitage and Phil Behney will
meet to update the list.
New Business:
Russell designated March to be Membership Month challenging
each of us to sign up a new member.
Russell will inquire if the Avery Pt. campus will repeat the
Maritime Day this year with our participation.
Boathouse Projects:
John Hacunda, with help from members, is making good progress
planking his boat.
George Spragg will contact John Maxson about disposition
of the mold they both own.
Upcoming Events:
Seal Row – Early 2009 (time to be determined) - Mystic
Shipyard East
Essex River Race, Essex, MA Row – 5.5 miles open water
- May 17.th
Messabout – date to be determined – staff to
be formed to handle food, destination, participates, etc.
Good of the Order:
God speed Bill Armitage, who yesterday had a clot removed
from one of his artery stents, but only after winning the
Hull, MA Snow Row race

John Gardner Small Craft Workshop
June 6-7, 2009
See nearly 100 peapods, whitehalls, sharpie skiffs, wood and
canvas canoes, kayaks, performance rowing craft, dories, dinghies,
tenders and other boats as participants share their boats
with other enthusiasts.
Also, take advantage of the opportunity to get on the water
in a wide variety of boats — sailboats and rowing and
paddling craft — and gain a lifetime’s experience
in small craft-related skills during the course of the weekend.
Enjoy boat sharing, workshops and a row down the Mystic River
early Sunday morning.
