John Gardner Chapter: February 2010 Meeting Minutes
President John Hacunda called the meeting to order at 1:30
PM 2-7-2010.
Introduction of members and guests:

Minutes
Minutes from January 10, 2010 were approved as distributed.
Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer’s report was read by Bill Armitage and approved
by the membership.
Old Business
Mystic shipyard East (MSYE) garage repairs were discussed.
John Symons inspected the building and gave an overview of
its present condition. Russ has spoken to the owner. Russ
will give us an update at the next meeting.
Bill Armitage will investigate different selling options for
the Robb Roy Canoe and report back to the membership next
meeting.
John Hacunda offered to put together an ad for soliciting
donations for the tag sale.
Discussion on other fundraising ideas was tabled.
Shop activities include:
• Hacunda Skiff moving towards completion
• Avery Point Dory is being painted and will be out
of the shop shortly.
• George Spragg continues to add planks to his canoe
and will be completed soon.
Schedule for upcoming shop projects:
• Blaiklock’s Robb Roy Canoe will be brought down
at the next meeting to be surveyed for possible repairs in
preparation to sell.
• John Symons Skiff for refurbishing in the next few
weeks.
• Paul Robertson’s canoe for repairs.
Community outreach:
Russ Smith has stenciled some of the Dories with our web address.

The Facebook site is up and running with a total of sixteen
fans as of this writing.
Bill Armitage offered to run a workshop for UConn students
and/or faculty to build three or four solo guide boats the
same as the two he built for himself, follow the link for

The Sea Scouts have once again offered to join with us for
our annual Pine Island cleanup on May 2, 2010.
The Scouts have asked for help repairing their boats and
provided a list. Bruce C offered to meet with Parson’s
to survey the work needed.
Activities for attracting and sustaining members were discussed.
Possible ideas included offering boats to the general public
via ads. Concern over fee’s, and insurance issues were
discussed.
New Business
Volunteers are needed to man a table with John Hacunda at
the “Maritime College and Career Fair” to be held
at the Branford House, Avery Point Campus, April 21st, 5pm
to 7pm. For more information regarding the Fair, see flyers
which are available at the boat house.
New brochures need to be printed. Discussion ensued. Phil
Behney will mail the PDF of existing brochure to John Hacunda
for review. Further discussion was tabled until the next meeting.

March 6, 2010: Race Start at 12 PM, 31st Annual Snow Row
in Hull, Massachusetts.
