Members' Boats: Jim Swallow

Dragonfly

This is Jim's latest boat, a 20' St. Lawrence Skiff. (See construction details on the
Boatbuilder's Corner page). He built this one largely from the Mystic Seaport plans.
He modified the traditional interior according to advise from Peter McKay in Juneau AK
who has extensive experience rowing and sailing the Inside Passage coastline in
St. Lawrence Skiffs. Hinged outriggers, machined from stainless steel are made according
to his plans and work very well.

River Otter

Known as the Fireflyby those familiar with plans for "pulling boats"
available from Wooden Boat Magazine. Jim built this with okume
plywood, fir plywood, Douglas fir, and Red Oak. He uses a Piantedosi Row Wing,
which fits perfectly with no modifications to either the boat or the row wing.
Note the moderate carrying capacity.

Arctic Seal

Built by Jim from plans in John Gardner's Dory Book; this is the "Nahant Dory",
and very similar to the Swampscott Dory. Seventeen feet in length and four feet wide,
this boat rows well. Constructed from okume Plywood, fir plywood, and Honduras Mahogany.
